Altona Demographics

According to the 2006 Australian Census almost 10,000 people call Altona home, with over two thirds born in Australia, and the other quarter born in a host of overseas countries, primarily England, Malta and New Zealand.

Three quarters of the work-able population were in full time or part time employment, with a mere 5% unemployed. Of those employed, the fields worked in are; Professionals 19.4%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 17.9%, Technicians and Trades Workers 15.2%, Managers 11.1% and Labourers 9.4%.

In Altona, the median weekly individual income for persons aged 15 years and over is $431, compared with $466 in all of Australia.

There are almost 5,000 separate dwellings in Altona, of which three quarters are houses, and the rest a mixture of apartments, town houses and units. And of these 5000 dwellings almost three quarters are fully owned or being paid for by means of a mortgage - much higher than the national average.
